How Much Does It Cost To Ship A Fishing Rod In 2020?

If you clicked here, it is very likely that you are planning to ship a fishing rod (or you are having a hard time sleeping and a random question popped out of your head). There are many reasons why you would want to ship a rod. Whatever reason it is, we will answer in detail how much it costs to ship a fishing rod of different sizes.

With standard ground shipping, it will cost between $26 USD and $38 USD to ship a short or a medium sized fishing rod (between 6 ft and 8 ft). Shipping a longer rod (9 ft-13 ft) will cost between $250 and $500. Longer rods (100 inches long or more) require freight shipping.

If you are going to go on a trip, or if you just sold one (or many) rods and you have to ship them, but you don't know how to to do it and how much it will cost, keep on reading! This post will help you out a lot.

What Influences the cost of shipping?

Size, weight and the distance that the fishing rod is going to travel are the main factors that will determine the cost of shipping

How do you prepare your rod for shipping?

Put your rod inside a PVC tube. Make sure you wrap your rod(s) in bubble wrap so it/they will be protected. Use enough bubble wrap and tape to the point that when it's inside the tube, it won't have space to move. It has to be tight. If you have a solid rod case, this will be the easiest. If the rod case is too heavy or bulky, it will influence the shipping cost. We made a detailed guide on how to do a DIY fishing rod tube

If you choose to ship your rod with a store bought solid rod case, make sure you wrap the rods up in bubble wrap (in case they mistreat the item).

What locations are we using to get these rates?

To get these rates, we used 2 scenarios: best case and worst case scenario.

Best Case Scenario- Shipping Cost from Maine to New Hampshire

For the best case scenario, we will be giving you the cost of shipping a fishing rod from Biddeford, Maine (Zip Code: 04005) to Amherst, New Hampshire (Zip Code: 03031). We think these two locations are ideal to use them as an example for our best case scenario because these 2 states are next to each other(Seriously, less than a 2 hour drive!). It can hardly get any cheaper than this.

Worst Case Scenario- Shipping Cost from Maine to California

For the worst case scenario, we made sure we picked two locations that are totally apart from each other. We will be giving you the cost of shipping a fishing rod from Biddeford, Maine (Zip Code: 04005) to Lemon Grove, California (Zip Code: 91945). These 2 spots are definitely on the opposite side from each other on the map. It will hardly get any more expensive than this.

For these rates, we used an 11 foot rod:

This is where things get interesting. From getting a $37 quote on UPS for a 96 inch rod (8 ft), we got a $261 for a 100 inch rod. Same situation with FedEx. So, if you have a 99 inch or shorter rod, go for the traditional carriers (UPS, FedEx, etc.), but if you have a longer rod, you are going to have to use a freight carrier.

But don’t worry, we’ve got you covered! We will also give you some rates for longer rods from freight companies.  We will use the same criteria we have been using.

Here are some quotes we got. Take into consideration that prices can fluctuate a little bit more in freight shipping (at least, in comparison to standard shipping):

  • Hey, Laura!

I looked into this and the best way to go is with UPS (USPS could be worth looking into as well). Using these dimensions: 75″×6″×6″, UPS gave me a quote of $78. The price varies a lot when there are little changes to the item dimensions, so it could vary quite a bit. I am not sure about the size of your rod case, but I used the dimensions previously mentioned to get this quote. This should give you a rough estimate of what to expect.

    I hope this helps.

Don’t hesitate to reach out again if you have any other questions!
