How much does a fishing rod weigh? (In Ounces, W/Examples)

Maybe you are just curious, or maybe you have some problems with your joints and you need to know about the weight of different rods. We will cover (with different examples and comparisons) what the average weight is for different length ranges.

A fishing rod within the 7 ft and 8 ft range can weigh between 3 and 4 ounces without a reel. With a reel, it weighs between 11 and 12 oz. Rods in the 8 ft and 9 ft length range can weigh from 10 to 14 oz without a reel (this number may vary widely). With a reel, they can weigh between 18 and 22 oz. For 10 ft and 11 ft rods, they can weigh between 13 and 17 oz without a reel, and between 21 and 25 oz with a reel attached. Once again, these numbers can vary a lot depending on the features of the rod. 12 ft rods and longer can weigh between 14 oz and 22 oz. For fly fishing rods, they are very light in comparison to casting and spinning rods. They usually weigh between 4 and 6 ounces.

What about the weight of the rod with the reel?

There would be too many variables if we took the exact weight from different reels. We are going to take the average weight that we got from 5 different reels, which is 8 oz. So, further ahead, on the “Rod Weight In Ounces (With Reel)” clumn, this number will be the weight of the rod plus 8.

How much does does a 6 foot and 7 foot fishing rod weigh?

For this length range, we are going to grab 5 rods and compare the weight between each other. Don’t worry, there is not much difference between the weight of a casting and a spinning rod in this length range.

As you can see from the above table, 8 ft and 9 ft rods under different brands range in various weights. However, there are a few options that range from 4 to 6 oz, which we found on the Douglas and Carrot Stix rods. The purpose of the rod (what fish it targets or what lure it’s made for), if it’s for freshwater or saltwater, among other factors, will determine how and what materials the rod will be made of, which influences the final weight of the rod. Needless to say, fly fishing rods are a totally different game when it comes to weight. They are very light.
